Scotland and Protected Food Names

September 21, 2010

The importance of Protected Food Names (PFN) to Scotland is clearly outlined in “Recipe for Success” - Scotland's National Food and Drink Policy. Under the heading “Enhancing our reputation”.

The policy states that Scotland should: “Identify and pursue opportunities, provide advice and support for businesses that could benefit from the legal protection of protected food names”.

By volume and value, Scotland has some of the largest PFNs in the EU. However, in terms of number and range of products, uptake of the scheme is relatively low and currently there are only nine PFN registrations Scotland (1% of the total in Europe).

This report provides the findings of a scoping consultation undertaken by IBP Strategy & Research on behalf of the Intellectual Assets Centre to understand the areas of most potential for application to become PFN holders as well as the support requirements of those considering applying for PFN protection
