Results of a Benchmarking Study on Support Services in the Field of IPR is now available.  The European Commission, DG Enterprise and Industry, has just announced that the study Benchmarking National and Regional Support Services in the field of IPR for SME's is available for download at no cost from http://www.proinno-europe.eu.

World IP Day: 26 April

On World Intellectual Property Day this year, WIPO's focus is on celebrating innovation and promoting respect for intellectual property.

French Senate approves London Agreement

 On 9 October 2007, the French Senate voted to approve ratification of the London Agreement. This follows approval of the same legislation by the National Assembly on 26 September 2007, and means that the French Parliament has now authorised ratification.

Change to the examination of UK trade mark applications.

The UK Intellectual Property Office (UK-IPO) is set to radically change the way it examines UK trade mark applications.  As of 1st October 2007 it will examine all new trade mark applications on the basis of absolute grounds and will no longer refuse to register a new trade mark application because of an earlier existing trademark - unless of course the owner of the earlier mark successfully opposes the application.

This change will bring the UK system in line with the EU trade mark examination system.

IA Consultancy - opportunity available

New Highlands & Islands Programme

We are delighted to announce that from the end of August Fiona Jackson will be based in the Highland & Island Region, thanks to Highlands and Islands Enterprise support.  She is working on a new Intellectual Assets Company Development Programme and is currently seeking companies from throughout the Highlands and Islands who are interested in taking a fresh approach to harness untapped value from their intangibles.  Business coaches are also being sought to support this programme.  See our new Highlands & Islands section for full details (or click onto the article).

Patent Office Secondee joins the IA Centre

The Patent Office has long been a supporter of the IA Centre with Lawrence Smith-Higgins sitting on our board.  We are delighted that as part of their ongoing commitment to support Scottish organisations, Martin Layton has been seconded to the IA Centre.  The secondment is for one year and with his IP expertise (in particular on trade marks) he shall be an invaluable member of the Business Services team.

Law Society of Scotland Seminar

Solicitors will have the opportunity to take part in a session with an interactive introduction to intellectual assets and the benefits of good IA management in Edinburgh on 21st September.  Fiona will be presenting this as part of a seminar on Intellectual Property being run by the Law Society of Scotland as part of their continuing professional development programme.  It is aimed at non-specialists engaged in general commercial practice or corporate law and we’re delighted to be able to bring the wider concept of intellectual assets to this session.

Europe pilots new methods of managing intangible assets

The EC believes that increasingly the valuable, so-called 'intangible' assets of companies within member states are not sufficiently appreciated. Additionally company managers need more extensive training in identifying and reporting these. It has set in train some key projects to provide new insights and tools.

Valuing Intellectual Property
